Carrefour opts for Cash &Carry Format

Wednesday, November 14, 2007

$130 Billion French retailing giant, Carrefour is expected to go all alone into the wholesale Cash & Carry retailing in India. Previously it had talks with Bharti Airtel and many other Indian companies but the deal hasn't gone through. It is believed to be still in talks with DLF.

Sources indicated that Careefour wants to take a wait and watch approach unlike its American counterpart, Wal-Mart which has joined hands with Bharti group. By going into the wholesale B2B market, Careefour will not attract any political or activists opposition.

Careefour wanted a slower roll-out in India which was not acceptable to Indian partners, thus the Cash & Carry business as an interim arrangement to get a footing into one of the fastest emerging economies of the world.
