Mall Managers Trying to Increase Footfalls

Thursday, November 29, 2007

It is a good thing that retailers and mall owners are equally interested in wooing consumers to their malls, offering variety of innovative means, products and discounts.

In a survey we found the following interesting mechanisms employed by some malls to attract more foot falls.
  • Select Citywalk, a high end mall in Saket, New Delhi plans to offer concessional taxi services to its customers. They also plan to launch a loyalty programme.
  • Unitech will start bus service to fetch customers to the mall from Jan-2008. They also plan to launch a Gym in Noida Mall along with Coffee Shop and Hypermarket. Goal is to convert the consumers of Gym into customers of Coffee shop to have breakfast or shop at hypermarket.
  • Parsvnath Developers is toying with the idea of having banks, payment centers for telecom services, insurance, medical stores and health clinics.
  • Central Mall in Bangalore charges you for the parking which can be adjusted against shopping at any outlet including Cafeteria
  • Ambience Mall in Guragon is planning to reimburse customers who might have paid toll on their way to the mall
Bottom line, Retail India is finally realizing that Customer is the King and is the most important visitor on their premises. Way to go Mall Managers and Retailers :-)

Which way DLF will bite - Wendys or Burger King ?

Sunday, November 25, 2007

Owning prime properties across multiple cities in India ? Opportunities come knocking to your doorstep. Retailer are standing in queue outside DLF's K.P.Singh's office offering him retail opportunities.

DLF has had talks with Burger King and Wendy's quick service restaurants. Both the burger chains are serious about getting a share in the Indian market. Burger King has approximately 11,000 outlets of which 90% are owned and operated on franchisee model. So also Wendy's has 6,000 restaurants worldwide operating on the same model. Burger King is hungry for growth in emerging markets and wants to cut a deal ASAP.

Insiders are saying that DLF may end up being the master franchisee for Burger King in India. DLF is at a great advantage due to the prime commercial properties it owns as well as its deep pockets for investment. Most Quick Service Restaurants have put off their Indian plans due to the 30-35% of their top line towards real estate. However, McDonalds which entered India years ago is doing well and may lose some customers to BK when the latter starts operations in the Indian market.

Women Only Stores Vs Malls - Case Study

Monday, November 19, 2007

Exclusive Case Study of Women Only Stores Versus Malls in IndiaWe conducted a study about Women Only Stores Vs Malls in India and here is a brief report on our findings.

Indian retailers have found out what the Women want and hence they are creating dedicated spaces to woo the Lady shopper. "W" Womens Wear brand was the first one to enter this vertical in 2002. Currently it has 40 stores and is growing strongly. It plans to double the number of stores by end of 2010.

The demand for comfortable stylish yet affordable women's wear is on the rise. Today's woman needs a wardrobe that's stylish, international and yet suits her needs. Brands such as Reebok Women, Miss Players and Van Heusen Women are trying to befriend women while Provogue Lifestyle is also conceptualizing the launch of women only stores. Thus the success of Women only stores is witnessed in the Indian retail market.

Now we also studied on why Eva Mall promoted by Bangalore based Prestige group converted it from Women & Kids only mall to Neutral brand. The concept of niche mall was ahead of its time and there was simply not enough market for it. Adding to Eva Malls failure was the fact that it did not have a strong anchor tenant to pull only the women into the mall.

Lee Plans Concept Stores

Lee Concept Stores in IndiaLee is toying with the idea of concept stores - i.e build a theme and convey a certain brand ethos to enhance shopping experience.

Lee opened a boutique store in Greater Kailash, Delhi targeting the elite Lady shoppers. This store conveys an uppity attitude and celebrates snobbery right from its diamond studded signage to store interiors with modern furniture, plasma television and foot massagers.

The Lee store in Bangalore is all about Vintage meets contemporary and the Pune store is all about Youth. The Ahmadabad store will be pitched as Buddy Lee.

Mr. Jain, Business Head, Lee said,
Concept stores give consumers a complete brand experience and convey the values and lifestyle imagery of the brand. These large concept stores bring all the images of the brand unlike large retail outlets which just stock and sell our products.
Lee in India is in venture with VF Arvind Brands which is on a big revamp of its retailing strategy. Lee had also tried Bluecast Mobile Marketing in India earlier this year.

Only Vimal - The Comeback

If you are an Indian, then I am sure you are aware of the "Only Vimal" brand that made waves in the Indian fabric market in the 1980s. With Dhirubhai Ambani, hungry for growth, his eldest son and visionary, Mukesh Ambani designed and executed the blueprint of Reliance to get into Petrochemicals and Petroleum helping the company make $3 bn in profits every year :-)

With retailing becoming the core of Reliance's emerging businesses, Mukesh decided to revamp the existing Vimal brand and launched it pre-diwali in exclusive outlets across India.

The sailing may not be as smooth as expected and the company may have to test some rough waters too. Competitors like Raymonds say that sub-brands within Vimal [Red, White and Black] may create confusion amongst shoppers. Also since this is the first time that Vimal is being sold in Ready to Wear segment, the company doesn't have a credible positioning.

However, sources from Vimal are quick to retaliate by saying that the Vimal is innovative and premium but still at affordable pricing to the Indian consumer. Vimal always meant fashion for everybody and never for one targeted segment. Vimal si all about young, contemporary and vibrant looking.

The brand will retail through 24 new flagship stores being added along with 200 franchisee owned outlets. Reliance Mart and Reliance Trendz will also retail the Vimal collection. For business opportunities, you may contact Reliance directly.

Metro to Source more from India

Thursday, November 15, 2007

One of the benefits of letting giant foreign retailers to operate in India was under the expectations of them sourcing more from India for their global operations. The strategy has seen the light of the day with German wholesale retailer METRO deciding to hike and scale up its sourcing from India.

Metro Group Buying a group company of Metro is set to source Food, Basmati rice and Dairy products from India to be sold in Europe and other Asian countries. Mr. Martin.D, MD of India said,
The opportunities in the export of food category is immense as India has the advantage of producing organically grown food products and has vast agricultural diversity. We plan to source food products like nuts, spices, fruits & vegetables, basmati rice and diary products. Suppliers have to give us the volume we need for exports. Once suppliers become comfortable with the METRO way of doing business we will find opportunities for them to supply into the entire METRO sales network which operates in 31 countries.
METRO is all set to expand in Punjab next year. So far the company is growing very slowly in India.

Diwali Shopping Hit a new High

Wednesday, November 14, 2007

Diwali Shopping hit a new record this time. It was really anticipated with the booming economy. In the consumer durables sector, we have inputs from LG India which said that they have recorded between 37-40% higher sales compared to last Diwali. High end LCD TVs and Washing Machines were the hot selling products in the Metros. Some stockists even ran out of stock.

A Maruti dealer in Delhi sold 140 cars through 2 of his dealership outlets, a new all time record for Maruti Suzuki India. Honda clocked highest sales of 40 cars in a single day. GM India said that this month had the biggest retail sales ever and most of them are extending the offering until the end of November to achieve new record. Bike sales also hit a new high at 45,000 bikes being sold on a single day.

We should congratulate Amul for changing the mindset of Indian consumer. They have migrated them from Sweets/Mithais towards chocolate tradition. They recorded 30% higher sales and sold 2 Lakh gift packets of Chocolates.

This reminds me of the Thanks Giving sales in the US, which marks the beginning of the shopping season. Retailers wake up, India has atleast 500 million middle class citizens who want a change, chalk out big retail strategies in India to cash in 0n the last economic boom in the world.

Carrefour opts for Cash &Carry Format

$130 Billion French retailing giant, Carrefour is expected to go all alone into the wholesale Cash & Carry retailing in India. Previously it had talks with Bharti Airtel and many other Indian companies but the deal hasn't gone through. It is believed to be still in talks with DLF.

Sources indicated that Careefour wants to take a wait and watch approach unlike its American counterpart, Wal-Mart which has joined hands with Bharti group. By going into the wholesale B2B market, Careefour will not attract any political or activists opposition.

Careefour wanted a slower roll-out in India which was not acceptable to Indian partners, thus the Cash & Carry business as an interim arrangement to get a footing into one of the fastest emerging economies of the world.

Open 100% FDI - Mattel

Tuesday, November 13, 2007

Mattel Inc, America's largest toy maker is asking the Indian government to open 100% FDI in toys retailing. Toy companies grow with the growth in retail sector.

Mr. Chris Willson, VP of Mattel said,
We need to grown. In the long term we see India as a potentially very-very large market. The problem is local retailers' operations are relatively small in comparison with foreign players.
Mattel entered India with Blowplast [You maybe aware of the Leo Mattel brand, it was from this JV]. But the JV was called off after Blowplast failed to meet quality standards of Mattel. Since then Mattel is dealing with Indian retailers on its own but is unhappy that it can't setup its own stores.

Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Industries which launched the revamped Vimal brand is now planning to co-brand the same. Mr. Anand Parekh, president of RIL Textile business said,

A lot of appareal sitting in our stores and exports have been inspired by Italian designers. Now this can be consolidated further with the possiblity of a co-branding initiative. The collaborator can provide technical assistance.
We already know that Vimal's most premium brand - Vimal Black is inspired by Italian designer, Maurizio Bonas.

The company is also planning a complete revamp of its furnishing brand - Harmony. Mr. parkeh added,
All this time we have not leveraged the Harmony brand because the Indian consumers are fickle with regard to furnishing fabrics. They are more led by colors, designs and discounts not necessarily by the quality of the products. We are currently evaluating on how to build volume into this business.
